Small Business Tools | An App Review of Pocket

Great small business tools can make all the difference to your business. At The Orbit Group, we love to get in there and automate and streamline where possible. We’re already a fan of cloud storage like Box or Dropbox, or online accounting software in the cloud like Xero. But here’s another usage for it – bookmarking.

If you spend a lot of time with content marketing, Pocket can be a life saver. You can use it to keep up with industry trends and important information or find fun, inspiring stuff to read later on. The choice is yours.

Whatever the case, it’s time for you to meet your new best friend.

Here’s our review of bookmarking App, Pocket.

The nuts and bolts of Pocket

Pocket is a dandy little App that allows you to save the best of the web to read for later. Once you’ve chosen what you want, Pocket displays the content to your smartphone, tablet or computer. You can access blogs, videos and all kinds of online content whether you’re online or offline. That makes it ideal for the times when you’re waiting in line, on the bus or killing time.

How does it work?

Pocket has been around since 2007 and has grown with our love of content, Apps and smart technology. The designers of Pocket have tried to mirror our human approach to the web.

As such, you can access Pocket in 3 main ways:

  • Via Apps: Pocket is integrated in over 500 third party apps, like Feedly, Flipboard and Twitter, making it ideal for tablet and smartphone consumers
  • Email: You can save content to Pocket via email through emailing a link to add@getpocket.com
  • Internet browser: Load Pocket to your Chrome, Safari or Firefox browser and click the ‘save for later’ button. Or make use of bookmarklets to save the page directly to your computer or iPad.
So why do the team from The Orbit Group love it?

We love well placed small business tools. Anything that saves us time and has a focus on efficiency usually gets invited for a second cup of tea around here! We love Pocket as it gives us one place where we can store and read content anywhere, any time – online or offline. The icing on the tea time cupcake is it’s free. How blooming awesome is that?

Here at the Orbit HQ, we share articles that we’ve read over the weekend on a Monday morning. Or share a video that we’ve found interesting (or a funny cat video) to help keep stress down on a busy day. Sharing interesting, useful, thought provoking and fun content is a great way for our team to stay informed and stress free.

When we’re sharing, we often don’t have the time to read or watch it there and then. With Pocket, we can save it to read later. Saving content increases the chances of everyone reading it. That’s a huge benefit when it comes to work related information. Or being in on the same office joke!

How Orbit’s Kate uses Pocket to the best advantage

Pocket is one of my favourite new discoveries.

I use Pocket to save items I’d like to buy and news articles I want to read. When it comes to work, I save articles I think will help my clients and products or ideas I’d like to trial. And my afternoon tea and workday commute are a lot more fun with videos and music I want to watch saved for later.

Using Pocket is like curating my own little organised news hub. It’s a digital library of my internet picks. All handpicked by me and sorted in a way that is useful.

One of my favourite features is that Pocket is asynchronous. That means once you store to the cloud, you can read it from anywhere on any smart device you choose.

The other great feature is that once you save something to the App, it automatically downloads the content. This means when you’re on a flight (only time I’m ever without internet), you still have your digital library at your fingertips.

If you use content marketing as part of your business, Pocket is incredibly useful. Pocket kills that sharing for sharing’s sake mentality. One of my pet hates is companies who share content who have not read the article first.

By using Pocket, we are able to read and share content that is always useful to our clients. We know this because we have taken the time to read it and have added to our social because it’s relevant.

The final word on an App called Pocket

We’re not alone in our love for Pocket. It has won awards for being the Best Productivity App. And it has 1 billion pieces of content marketing saved by a whopping 12 Million users. Not bad for a free App!

We’d recommend you give Pocket a go to help curate your content. It’s a streamlined, beautiful and a simple save it for later App that is great at taming the deluge of information. And allows you to make smart decisions and stay up to date without feeling like you’re drowning in a sea of content.

At the end of the day it’s free – what have you got to lose? Check out Pocket for yourself.
